For the New York project I partnered with artist Shinique Smith and the Brooklyn Museum. Below is their invitation.

Now Be Here #2, October 23, 2016, 9-11am

Dear Fellow Artist,

I am writing to invite you to participate in a unique event that I am organizing.

The idea is simple: a gathering and photographic portrait of New York’s female and female-identifying artists at the Brooklyn Museum.

In August, artist Kim Schoenstadt launched her Now Be Here project at Hauser, Wirth & Schimmel in Los Angeles during the exhibition Revolution in the Making: Abstract Sculpture by Women: 1947 – 2016, in which I was honored to be included. This first gathering inspired 733 artists to come together for a historic group photograph documenting their presence.

Now, Kim continues this project in New York City, at the Brooklyn Museum, which is close to my heart, as it launches a season of programming in celebration of the ten year anniversary of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, A Year of Yes: Reimagining Feminism at the Brooklyn Museum.

Photographer Paola Kudacki will document our group portrait and Kim will be our guide on Sunday, October 23, 2016 for this initiative’s exciting New York iteration.

This last year, women’s issues and art practices have been on the forefront of creative and progressive action, and we have only just begun to scratch the surface of what the future holds for our community.

This is an opportunity for us to capture a moment where we stand together as women and artists, united together in all of our diversity.

RSVPs are required so we can organize appropriately—we encourage you to RSVP today, as space is limited to 1000 artists.  A photograph of the entire group will be taken, and later available as an online archive; each participant will receive a link to the final photograph for her archives.  The museum will open to the public at 11am and participating artists are invited to stay and view the exhibition Beverly Buchanan—Ruins and Rituals in its opening weekend.

I hope to see you at the Brooklyn Museum on October 23 at #NOWBEHERENYC2016.

Let’s show the world how we do things in New York!

Best wishes,
Shinique Smith
